Frequently asked questions

What is Totally Local?

Totally Local is an online marketplace connecting producers and growers directly to local consumers all over New Zealand. It is like an online 24/7 Farmers Market where shoppers can buy a range of food, beverage and other produce in one go and the sellers each receive their part of the order (meat, veges, beer, juice etc) with an instruction to deliver or make available for pickup. Basically, a new and innovative consumer sales channel for your business. As the seller, you set the rules so you don’t commit to deliveries you cannot manage or products you cannot fulfil.

How much will it cost?

Totally Local is a free service to sellers except for a payment gateway fee charged for each transaction. We have split this charge so that it is shared between the seller and the consumer. Each will pay

For example, a $100 order will incur a charge of $1.65. On that basis, the seller will be remitted $98.35 for your order. A $40 order will incur a $0.75c charge. The consumer will incur the same fee as the seller as a service charge.

Funds are remitted to your account 14 days after the sale is made. Stripe (our online payment processor) holds the funds for 7 days and Totally Local holds the funds for 7 days.

There are no listing fees or paid sales commissions to Totally Local and there is no contract or minimum term.

It is our intention to run Totally Local with a “no sales commission” model for as long as we are able.  You will be notified well in advance of any changes to this model.

When will the site go live?

Our “go live” is in two stages.

Stage 1 is live. It is only available to producers, to allow you to create your store and get your products listed.

Stage 2 is at the end of August, when we open the door to shoppers at totallylocal.nz.

How do I get started?

There are a few things to think about in terms of creating your store on Totally Local: what products will you list? Whether you deliver to your locals and how much I charge for that? Do I send my product nationally? Do I have good product images? We’ve written a couple of documents to help you get started. Our store set up primer gets you thinking about a handful of important decisions upfront and goes hand in hand with our onboarding guide (can you put this link in and give it right name) that takes you through step by step. If you have all your information to hand it will take you less than an hour to create your store and list your products.

We’ve got a blog to help you get going with taking great product photos

Do I need to be a designer or developer to use Totally Local?

No, you don’t need to be a designer or developer to use Totally Local.
You can customise the look of your store with the tools we provide. If you have existing photos of your products or you are handy with a mobile phone camera, that is the extent of the creative work required to create your store. If you need extra help, you can contact our support team.

What happens when I receive an order?

Totally Local is not live for shopping until the end of August. When an order is made by a shopper, you’ll receive an email which can go direct to your mobile if you choose to set up an email client on your phone.

Where can I sell on Totally Local?

You can sell to any geography you choose. You can limit your sales to a radius distance from your store. This could be 10km or 50km for example. You can also choose to sell your products all across New Zealand and use a courier service to distribute.

Do I need to ship items myself?

There are three options to get the orders to the shopper:
  1. Local Shoppers can have the option to pick-up from your store if you choose to allow that.
  2. You can choose to deliver locally and set free shipping thresholds, delivery days, and maximum distances for delivery that suit the tempo of your business.
  3. You can use a third party courier service to send your products further and charge the customer as part of their transaction.

Important links and account stuff

Setting Up Your Email

The email address you use to create your Totally Local store login is the same one that will receive your inbound store orders and customer communications. It is not essential but we recommend that you use a dedicated email address for your login – either a gmail account or a business email – just one that corrals all of the important stuff for you and your team relating to Totally Local orders an any customer communications.

Where do I log into the site to create products and update my store?

You use the Store Manager to create your Totally Local shop. You will be prompted to login if you haven’t done so.

How do I check my store out once I create it and add products?

The easiest way for you to do this is to login to your Totally Local Producer Account and head to the home page. When you are logged in you will see menu options to My Store and another option to View All Stores as they become available on the site.
Feel free to head on over to our current Totally Local customer site to read our blogs and other content.
